Step 1: Apply for a Provisional Driving Licence

To begin taking driving lessons in the UK, you'll need a valid provisional driving licence. You can apply online at gov.uk.

Your driving journey can't start without this step, so apply early!

If you're searching for a "driving school near me", we've got local instructors in your area ready to help you get started.

Step 3: Book Your First Driving Lesson

When you're ready, your instructor will book your first lesson and pick you up from home, work, or school.

In your first few lessons, you'll:

  • Learn the car's controls
  • Start moving off, steering, and stopping safely
  • Practice real-world road conditions
  • Build confidence at junctions, roundabouts, and more

We tailor every lesson to your experience and learning style. Whether you're a complete beginner or already have some experience, we'll help you progress smoothly.

Step 4: Study and Pass the Theory Test

Before you can take the practical test, you must pass the DVSA theory test.

It includes:

  • 50 multiple choice questions on road safety and driving laws
  • Hazard perception test using real video clips

At My Four Wheels, we provide free theory test support to all learners to give you the best chance of passing first time.

Step 5: Prepare for Your Practical Driving Test

Once your instructor feels you're ready, you'll book your practical driving test.

The test lasts around 40 minutes and includes:

  • General driving skills
  • One reversing manoeuvre
  • Independent driving using a sat nav or road signs

We use mock driving tests to prepare you fully, so you know exactly what to expect on the day.

Step 6: Get Your Full UK Driving Licence

Once you pass your test, you'll receive your full UK driving licence and can legally drive on your own.

At My Four Wheels, we're proud to see so many of our learners pass first time and gain the confidence to drive independently.
